When you visit your Pompano Beach garden in spring time, it is not uncommon to encounter mounds of dirt. In case you think that this is not created by your pet dog, then the culprit may be a wildlife creature. Different nuisance creatures will be leaving this sign as they are hunting their food. They can also dig to create tunnels where they will rear their young ones.

Different Animals that Dig Holes in the Garden

Various Florida species will dig the ground, from insects like ants to the birds such as the burrowing owl. They can survive in various types of settings and climate and will be active during the day or night. Here are some of them.

Skunk

The Florida skunks will dig the soil while they are looking for insects, grubs, and earthworms. The skunk will create two types of holes. The deeper hole which is usually located in an obscure area such as under the house will be their den. The shallow type of hole would be the hole created from hunting insects. With their nose, they can identify the location of the grubs. They will then use their claws to dig the hole. You will be seeing numerous holes in your lawn from an overnight visit.

Pompano Beach Raccoons

Just like the skunks, the raccoons are also digging the ground when they are hunting food. However, they will be doing this differently than the other species. The raccoons will be using their paw to flip and full the sods especially those places with new grasses. In case there is a skunk and raccoon in your yard, the skunk will be releasing their spray in order to drive away the raccoon. It will not be hard to identify the nauseating scent of their musk.

Moles

The Florida moles have a habit to leave piles of dirt on our yard since they will have to push it up. You will notice that there will be no visible holes from their den. During the summer season, they will be constantly pushing the soils up in order to keep their den cool. Once the winter season approaches, will continue with their habit. They will also be feeding on the insects that can be found in the soil.

Groundhog

Groundhogs are pesky creatures that can cause significant damage to our yard through their digging activity. They will create an extensive tunnel that is composed of several chambers and numerous exits. They can loosen the soil close to the foundation of our house that will weaken the structure. It will be too late once you see cracks on your walls.
